Eprinomectin is an abamectin used as a veterinary topical endectocide. It is a mixture of two chemical compounds, eprinomectin B1a and B1b. It is a highly effective, broad-spectrum, and low-residue veterinary anthelmintic drug that is the only broad-spectrum anthelmintic drug applied to lactating dairy cows without the need for milk abandonment and without the need for a rest period.
Kinetic studies show that eprinomectin can be absorbed by various routes: oral, percutaneous, subcutaneous, and intramuscular injection, with good efficacy and rapid distribution throughout the body. There are currently two commercial preparations: pouring agent and injection. Oral absorption has been found superior to transdermal absorption for the control of nematodes and blood-feeding arthropods.
The drug substance is a white crystalline solid at room temperature (Melting point: 173°C, Density: 1.23 g/cm3). Due to its lipophilic structure, it has high lipid solubility and is soluble in organic solvents like methanol, ethanol, and propylene glycol, but almost insoluble in water. It should be protected from light and stored under vacuum to prevent photolysis and oxidation.
Eprinomectin provides excellent control for internal and ectoparasites such as nematodes, hookworms, ascaris, helminths, insects, and mites in cattle, sheep, camels, and rabbits. It is primarily used for gastrointestinal nematodes and mange in livestock.
